Death for trio in robbery killings

THREE men were sentenced to death yesterday in the gassing death of seven people at an underground gambling den during a lethal robbery in Ruichang, eastern China's Jiangxi Province.

Two of the dead were accomplices in the robbery, who released toxic gas in the gambling room, a court in Ruichang's neighboring city of Jiujiang heard.

On June 7, Yang Litang, Huang Guoping, Wu Zhousheng and Pang Hongjian drove from Jiujiang to Ruichang where they had staked out a gambling den for a robbery, the court was told.

Pang and Wu each carried two bottles of hydrogen cyanide gas to poison the gamblers in a second-floor room. Huang waited outside, and Yang, who kept watch inside, was to steal valuables of the gamblers after the gassing.

Pang, Wu, and five people in the room died from the killer gas, according to court testimony.

Yang entered the room some time later to check. Seeing the seven unconscious, he opened the window for ventilation but fainted after inhaling the gas, the court heard.

Huang found the eight lying on the floor and called Li Zhengsheng, the robbery mastermind who stayed behind in Jiujiang. Both of them then fled. Yang, however, revived about an hour later and stole valuables worth 36,000 yuan (US$4,445) from the room and fled.

　3人の男性は、中国東部の江西省瑞昌市の秘密の賭場で強盗のため7人を中毒死させたとして、昨日死刑を宣告された。死亡した7名のうち2名は、強盗の共犯者で、賭場で毒ガスを放出した者だったという情報を、瑞昌市の隣りである九江市の裁判官は知っていた。

　6月7日、ヤン・リータンとホワン・ガオピン、ク・ゾーシェン、パン・ホンジェンは、九江市から強盗のため、以前から目をつけていた賭場のある瑞昌市に車で向かったと、法廷で明らかにされた。

　パンとクは、2階にある部屋で博打打ち共を毒殺するため、各々2本ずつシアン化水素ガスを運び上げた。ホワンは外で待機し、内部を見張っていたヤンは、ガス放射後に博打打ち達の貴重品を盗み出すということになっていた。

　法廷証言によると、パンとク、部屋にいた5人が毒ガスで死亡したという。

　ヤンは、モノを物色するためにしばらくしてから部屋に入ったが、7名が意識不明状態にあることを知り、換気のために窓を開けたが、ガスを吸引してしまい、その場で気絶したという。

　ホワンは、床に8名が横たわっているのを発見し、九江市に残っていた強盗計画立案者のリ・ジェンシェンを呼び出した。その後、両名は逃走を図った。ヤンは、およそ1時間後に意識を取り戻し、部屋から36,000元（約50万円）相当の貴重品を盗み、逃げたという。
