Voodoo worshipper gets probation for bringing skull into country

FORT LAUDERDALE -- A federal judge sentenced a Vodou practitioner accused of smuggling a human skull into the country to probation and $1,000 fine on Friday.

U.S. District Judge James I. Cohn also ordered Myrlene Severe, 30, to obtain employment, her attorney Kenneth Hassett said outside the Federal Courthouse on Broward Boulevard after the 11:30 a.m. sentencing.

The Miramar woman was arrested at Fort Lauderdale International Airport in February as she went through Customs. She was charged with bringing human remains into the country unlawfully.

Hassett told Judge Cohn Friday Severe was merely exercising her religious beliefs when she bought in the skull, thought to provide protection to Vodou practitioners in her native Haiti.

"It's for her safety," Hassett said. "All of us has something unusual in our religions."

Prosecutors originally charged Severe with three federal felony charges and she faced up to 15 years in prison.

In a deal reached with prosecutors in April, she pleaded guilty in exchange for the misdemeanor charge of improper storage of human remains.

【フォート・ローダーデール＠フロリダ州】　去る金曜日、連邦裁判官は人間の頭蓋骨をアメリカに密輸入したとして起訴されたブードゥー教祭司に対し、執行猶予と罰金1,000ドル（約11万5000円）を言い渡した。

　被告人弁護士であるケニス・ハセット氏が、午前11時半に行われた判決後、ブロワード通りに面した裁判所庁舎外にて明らかにしたところによると、合衆国地方裁判所のジェームス・I・コーン判事は、マイリーン・セベレ被告（30）に対し、仕事を探すようにとも命じたという。

　ミラマー在住のセベレ被告は今年2月、フォートローダーデール・ハリウッド国際空港にて税関手続時に逮捕された。彼女は、不当に人間の骨を持ち込もうとしたとして告訴された。

　ハセット弁護士は金曜日、コーン判事に対し、セベレ被告はただ単に宗教上の信条を実践しているだけであり、また彼女の出生地のハイチではブードゥー教祭司は保護されていると述べた。

　「（頭蓋骨持込みは）彼女の安全のためである」と、ハセット弁護士は述べた。「我々全員にも、宗教上何かしら変わったものがある」。

　当初、検察側はセベレ被告を3つの連邦重罪容疑で起訴し、最高懲役15年を科せられる恐れがあった。

　今年4月に司法取引が成立し、セベレ被告は人間の遺骨に関する非適切な保管に対する容疑と引き換えに、頭蓋骨の不当な持込に関して罪を認めていた。
