Parachutist discharged from hospital

Bloemfontein parachutist Benno Jacobs who survived what has been described as a 1 000m fall was discharged from hospital on Monday.

"He went home this morning (Monday)," Bloemfontein Medi-Clinic spokesperson Vivian Pistorius said.

Meanwhile, the Parachute Association of SA (PASA) said it was difficult to accept that the 35-year-old Jacobs actually fell 1 000m on Saturday.

It was more likely that he spiralled down.

"If it were true that the parachute did not open, there was no way he would have survived," said PASA safety and training officer Mark Bellingan.

Some news reports on Monday said Jacobs' parachute failed to open properly, and concluded it was a miracle that he escaped with no serious injuries.

Jacobs landed in a ploughed field near the Tempe airport outside Bloemfontein. He had no broken no bones, and not even a pulled muscle.

He was quoted as saying afterwards: "Because it was my first jump, I thought I had a bad landing."

Jacobs made the jump after completing a parachute course at the Bloemfontein parachute club.

Bellingan said he had a discussion with Jacobs on the matter, and it appeared the incident had been nothing more than a "pilot error".

"He was trained properly, the parachute opened correctly, and he did his control checks with it," said Bellingan.

"Then for an unknown reason, it seemed he just held the right-hand steering toggle down."

As a result, the jumper went into a spiral and hit the ground at greater, but not fatal, speed.

　パラシュートが開かないまま、1,000メートル上空から落下したという災難を生き残ったブルームフォンテイン在住のパラシューター、ベノ・ヤコブさん（35）は今週月曜日退院したとのこと。

　今月21日、ブルームフォンテイン・メディカル・クリニックの広報担当であるビビアン・ピストリウス氏が、「ヤコブさんは今朝自宅に戻った」と語った。

　一方、南アフリカパラシュート協会（PASA）は、35歳のヤコブさんが去る土曜日、1,000メートル上空から落下したことを認めることは難しいと発表した。

　ヤコブさんが、螺旋を描くように落下したのであれば、事実であるのかもしれないという。

　「パラシュートが開かなかったことが本当だとすれば、ヤコブさんは生存しているはずがない」と、PASAの安全性と研修を担当する役員であるマーク・ベリギャンは述べている。

　何社かの月曜日の新聞報道は、ヤコブさんのパラシュートが完全に開かずに、重傷を負うことなく生還したことは奇跡であると結論付けている。

　ヤコブさんは、ブルームフォンテインの外側に位置するテンペ空港近くの耕作地に着陸した。骨折も、筋肉を傷めることも全くなかった。

　彼は、「初めてのダイビングだったので、着陸が悪かったのだろうと思う」と述べたという。

　ヤコブさんは、ブルームフォンテイン・パラシュート・クラブにてパラシュート講習を完了してから、ダイビングを行った。

　ベリギャン氏は、今回の事件に関しヤコブさんと話し合う必要があり、またこの事象は「パイロット・エラー」以外の何物でもないように思われると語った。

　「ヤコブさんはちゃんとトレーニングし、またパラシュートは正常に開いた。パラシュートがちゃんとコントロール可能かどうかも確認した」と、ベリギャン氏は述べた。

　「そして、理由はまだわからないが、彼は右手に持ったステアリング・トグルを抑え付けているように見えた」。

　その結果、ヤコブさんは螺旋を描くように落下し、致命的とはいえないが、相当な速さで地面に叩きつけられたのだという。

　ヤコブさんは、こんな災難な目にあったのでもう二度とパラシュート降下はしないと述べている。
